Three Colours: Blue
In his Three Colours trilogy, Polish director and co-writer Krzysztof Kieslowski together with co-writers and frequent collaborators Krzysztof Piesiewicz and Agnieszka Holland, set out to explore the French Revolutionary aims of liberty, equality and fraternity in a personal as well as communal way. The first film of the series, Three Colours: Blue takes as its theme personal liberty, and whether (wo)man can survive as an island, without emotional ties to others, in order to self preserve and guard against the grief of loss. Would we be better off living alone, aloof and detached? Is it a viable way to protect oneself in the future after life-shattering grief?
