The Disappearance of the Millbrook Twins
Hayu, Amazon Prime
Sometimes the police investigation into a serious crime is so negligent that it beggars belief. Many factors may contribute to a less than thorough police case including socioeconomic factors (even today it’s obvious that those from the higher echelons of society usually have far more resources of every kind funnelled into investigations, and race (ditto).
If I hadn’t known the year of the kidnapping of the 15 year-old twins that is examined as a cold case in this documentary, but had just seen the appalling attitudes and inertia of the local police force, I would have guessed that it happened in the segregation era. But it didn’t, it happened in 1990 - a time when one might have assumed the Southern states would be making up for decades of racism.
This documentary is one of a series on Hayu, the Amazon Prime add-on, where a cold case is dissected by a lawyer and a seasoned police investigator. I’ve seen three of these so far, and they were all compelling. But the shoddy management of this crime when it occurred is egregious.
