The true crime genre is sometimes exploitative, when violent attacks, especially sexual attacks on women, are reenacted gratuitously. However, it’s pretty easy to guess which documentaries are best avoided: a breathy narrative voice, descriptions of what the female victim looked like (as if that’s relevant), or any scenes showing a dead or mutilated body are red flags.
